A collection of 40 copperplate engravings from the Anatomia Corporum Humanorum by William Cowper(1666- 1709). Dated 1739 . The work was sourced from Goverd Bidloo’s landmark work entitled Anatomia Humani Corporus that was produced in 1685. A battle accusing Cowper of plagiarism ensued. The plates are numbered 9, 10, 16, 17, 19, 23, 24, 26, 30, 33, 35, 36, 39, 40, 41, 42, 45, 46, 47, 48, 50, 51, 53, 54, 58, 59, 60, 61, 64, 65, 66, 73, 74, 75, 77, 78, 79, 83, 85, 95. The text in Latin that would describe the engraved organs is not present. Printed on hand laid paper. Size of sheet: 52 x 35.5 cms or 20 1/2 x 14 inches. Size of engraved image: 49 x 34 cms or 19 x 13 1/4 inches. Two of the engravings are longer than the above. One half as long again; the other twice as long. Condition: Very Good. The plates are tanned and generally marked. Some are darker than others. This should be made clear in the photographs. A few are slightly grubby and otherwise marked. Some are missing the tips of the corners and pieces from the edges. Plate number 17 is missing an entire corner. Some have repairs to closed tears that have been made from the reverse side.
