A Group of 8 papercuts by German Artist Gertrud Blecke.
Papercuts, or scherenschnitte, produced by cutting a silhouette from black paper that is then mounted on strong white paper.
Created in the 1920’s they are fine examples of the craft.
Various sizes. The largest measures 24.5 x 31.5 cms or 9 3/4 x 12 1/2 inches. The smallest - the seated figure and the figure carrying a hat box - measure 9 1/2 x 7 inches or 24 x 18 cms.
Condition: Very Good. Five of the silhouettes are complete having no loss. Three are slightly damaged. They are as follows: One of the pictures of Venice is missing a part of the surround; also the image of the woman with the parrot in a cage. The maid that is arranging a woman’s hair is missing a shoe. There are small marks and flaws on the white paper ground of all eight images. Three corners are creased for example, the edge of one is a little grubby, another is lightly foxed. These flaws could be disguised by careful faming however.
