A Textile Sample From Lyon France which was a center of silk production at the time of manufacture.
Dated circa 1890.
Ivory, red and gold coloured silk embroidered with gold and bronze coloured thread.
The gold embroidery is at its thickest - the body of the fish - about half a centimetre, or a quarter of an inch, thick.
This exquisite, hand stitched, piece was probably intended to decorate a priest’s chasuble which is an ornate sleeveless vestment worn when celebrating mass in the Catholic or High Anglican church.
The reverse is covered with gold coloured silk.
Size: 60.5 x 46 cms or 24 x 18 1/4 inches.
Condition: Near Fine. The whole is fresh clean and bright. The gold silk on the reverse is only slightly marked.
