A Textile Sample From Lyon, France. Design For a Chasuble. Heavily Embroidered With Gold Thread. Late 19th Century. 58x 47.5 cms.
A Textile Sample From Lyon France which was a center of silk production at the time of manufacture.
Dated circa 1890.
Ivory coloured silk heavily embroidered with gold coloured thread.
Dating from the later end of the 19th Century the gold embroidery is at its thickest a good centimetre, or half inch, thick. There is red fabric showing through in places.
This exquisite, hand stitched, piece was probably intended to decorate a priest’s chasuble which is an ornate sleeveless vestment worn when celebrating mass in the Catholic or High Anglican Church.
The silk ground is ivory coloured with a gold sheen running through it. The reverse is covered with red silk.
Size: 58 X 47.5 cms or 22 1/2 x 19 inches.
Condition: Very Good. The ground has some wear in places. There are a few pencil marks on the surface. The stitching and thread is excellent condition though it has possibly dulled slightly. The red silk on the reverse is a bit grubby.
