A Textile Sample From Lyon France which was a center of silk production at the time of manufacture.
Dated circa 1890.
Ivory coloured silk heavily embroidered with gold and bronze coloured thread.
The gold embroidery is at its thickest about half a centimetre, or a quarter of and inch, thick.
This exquisite, hand stitched, piece was probably intended to decorate a priest’s chasuble which is an ornate sleeveless vestment worn when celebrating mass in the Catholic or High Anglican Church.
The silk ground is ivory coloured. The reverse is covered with gold coloured silk.
Size: 46 x 43.5 cms or 18 x 17 inches.
Condition: Very Good. The whole has some wear in places. The gilt has worn off the metal on some high spots. The wirework trim around the edge is occasionally bent. The stitching remains in good general condition though it has dulled slightly. The yellow silk on the reverse is only slightly marked
