A Textile Sample From Lyon France which was a center of silk production at the time of manufacture.
Dated circa 1890.
Ivory covered silk heavily embroidered with gold coloured thread, ribbons and beads.
Dating from the later end of the 19th Century the gold embroidery is at its thickest a good half centimetre or quarter inch, thick.
This exquisite, hand stitched, piece was probably intended to decorate a priest’s chasuble which is an ornate sleeveless vestment worn when celebrating mass in the Catholic or High Anglican Church.
The silk ground is ivory coloured moire silk. The reverse is covered with ivory coloured silk.
Size: 56.5 X 45 cms or 22 1/2 x 17 3/4 inches.
Condition: Near Fine. The ground is clean and fresh. The stitching and thread is excellent condition though there is some loss to the very top of the upper most wheat sheaf. The gold braid has dulled in places very slightly.
