A Large sanguine portrait of a young man, possibly taken from a statue of Dionysus or Bacchus, the God of wine, fertility, ritual madness, theatre and religious ecstasy.

Drawn on handmade, cream coloured paper it might have been a study for a painting.

Unsigned.

French. 18th Century.

Large: 60 x 46 cms or 24 x 18 inches.

Condition: Very Good. The paper is creased. The rough edges are a little darkened. A short closed tear at the top has been repaired using archival tape. There is a small hole to the right of the paper, a mark on the man’s neck, and a larger brown mark that looks like mud to the right of his neck.

A highly skilled work of art ideal for Framing.
