At the top of each page a word or aphorism has been written in ink by the teacher, then copied by the pupil beneath. The pupil sometimes has difficulty fitting the word onto the page which has a pleasing effect. Examples of words and phrases chosen include “Endevour, Gain Some Knowledge, Learn Well Your Lessons, Idle Not In School, Abandon Man, Betray No Secrets, Compunction, Deride Not Infirmities, Fundemental, Gain Honourable Praise, Husbandman, Improve Your Hour, Kettle Drum, Quit Evil Company, Never Antedate Evil, Omnipotent, Command Your Temper, Punctuality Gains Esteem, Revenge is Cowardly, Xanthus a River in Asia, Sabbatarian, Time your amusements, Excel, Devonshire and Shun Wicked Company.
The covers of the excercise book are decorated with deers heads and quarrelsome dogs.
Condition: The cover of the book is only slightly worn and a little grubby. The pages within are marked by small signs of age and handling but generally clean. The binding is secure.
