Calceo Antiquo and Caliga Veterum

By Benoit Baudouin and Giulio Negrone.

Two books in one volume. Comprehensive histories of footwear. Written in latin.

Published in 1733 by Joh. Georg. Loewium

Size: 14.5 x 8.5 cms or 5 1/2 x 3 1/4 inches.

Page number: 330 and 210.

With 17 full page plates and 4 fold out plates. Plates in lude shoes shaped like oil lamps , high platform buskins, scythian curly-toed shoes, shoes for actors and popes, rope sandals and lead shoes that wear used as instruments of torture. The signature ‘Krugner’ is engraved on the bottom right hand corner of a few of the plates.

Hardcover. The boards are quite crudely bound in vellum with traces of a pattern still visible on the cover. A previous owners details are written quite beautifully inside the cover.

Condition: Very good. The covers are quite worn . There’s a bit of loss to the the spine. The book holds together well, the binding is secure and the pages, though tanned and very occasionally foxed, are clean and otherwise unmarked. I have read that there ought to be engravings in both books but the 21 that I have mentioned are only in the first.

A rare and unusual book.
