This plate was produced in 1792 soon after the French Revolution had taken place. The motto in the center of the plate translates as ‘The Law and The King.’The writing above translates as ‘The last plates produced by the so-called Old Factories, are assuredly those known by M. Champfleury as The Patriotic Plates. The variety of these plates, that are much admired by the people, oblige us to show some here. The environment and the times in which they were produced, did not it would seem, prevent the Republicans from producing such fautless things.’ Jules Champfleury was a french writer and art critic who specialised in the art of faïance.
Condition: Very Good. The white part of the print’s surface has browned at the edges. There is some faint foxing across the surface; also a couple of dots close to the left hand edge and a thin dark line at the bottom right that is a printers mark.
A lovely piece for framing perhaps in combination with others.
