Nevers? Faïence.
A patriotic plate attributed to Nevers.
From the original pencil drawing.
A chromolithogaph from La Faïence Populaire au XVIIIme Siecle by Mareschal. This book described the shapes, usage, decoration, colour and marks of this kind of ceramic.
Published in Paris in 1872.
Size: 26.7 x 17.2 cms or 6 3/4 x 10 1/2 inches.
This plate was produced in 1789 soon after the French Revolution (1789-1799) had begun. The image in the center shows a piece of wall from the Bastille being blown into the air by a canon blast. The author describes the image as crude but suggests that under the circumstances there was probably little time to do better.
Condition: Very Good. The white part of the print’s surface has browned at the edges and is very faintly marked by grey dots and foxing. The thin dark line at the top right hand edge is a printers mark.
A lovely piece for framing perhaps in combination with others.
