This plate was produced in 1792 a few years after the French Revolution (1789-1799) had begun. The script translates as “Three Phrygian caps edged in yellow with the label Bonnet de La Liberte beneath; this is what Jaques Bonhomme reveals, represeted by a spade; he has placed his legend at the top of a plate.” The Phrygian cap or liberty cap , was a soft cap with bent apex that was worn by French revolutionaries. Jaques Bonhomme was a name give to the wealthy peasant William Gale who became leader of the peasant Jaquerie in 1358.
Condition: Very Good. The white part of the print’s surface has browned at the edges and is very faintly foxed.
A lovely piece for framing perhaps in combination with others.
