George Braque (1882-1963) started painting whilst working for his father as a decorator. He moved to Paris to study in 1900. Of particular influence to his work were the Impressionists and Fauvists; chiefly the works of Matisse, Derain, Dufy and the late landscapes of Cezanne. But it was meeting with Picasso that had the greatest impact on him. Together they evolved as leaders of Cubism and it was this that impacted Braque’s output for the rest of his life. Cubism established that art should not just imitate nature but be a a thing autonomous in itself; an idea that came to define art in the 20th century. He was a painter, a collagist and a sculptor, favouring a vibrant pallete and energetic, geometric forms.
Condition: Near Fine. The print has been mounted onto a beige paper surround. There is a light crease on the left hand side of the print (see photograph). It is otherwise fresh and clean. The edges of the surround are a little creased. There is a short closed tear on the surround that has been repaired using archival tape at the bottom right corner.
