Three Original Artworks by Bimbi. Probably Designs For Greeting Cards. 1930’s.
Three designs by the artist known as Bimbi.
Undated but probably produced in the 1930’s since Micky Mouse features in one of them and he was created in 1928.
Painted on Windsor and Newton and Roberson’s board using ink and watercolour they were probably illustrations for greeting cards.
The first shows a small boy pointing his finger at Santa’s sack. The caption on the back reads “Carry your bag mister!” It measures 14.5 x 19 cms or 5 3/4 x 7 1/2 inches . It’s slightly soft and grubby at one corner in particular and Santa’s beard is marked.
The second shows two courting birds, a gentleman and a lady. The caption on the reverse reads “ I’d like to put a bit of salt on your tail”. This is a reference to an old folk tale that suggested salt on a bird’s tail would stop it flying away. It measures 14.5 x 22.5 cms or 5 3/4 x 9 inches. It’s foxed and otherwise marked . There’s a bit of loss to the paper at the right hand edge.
The third shows a small girl in the style of Mabel Lucie Attwell. This one is signed by the artist in such a way as appears on her greeting cards. It’s, but for a small brown dot, reasonably clean; but the card has been cut short so the flowers on her hat touch the top edge. It measures 23 x 14 cms 9 x 5 1/2 inches.
